Tani Diakite and Afrofunkstars
Tani and the Afrofunkstars are an ever-evolving ensemble rooted in the rich musical traditions of Wasulu, a region spanning the border of Mali and Guinea. Drawing from a diverse palette of West African rhythms and instruments, Tani Diakite captures the vibrant spirit of Wasulu music through infectious percussion, soulful vocals, and the bright tones of native stringed instruments. At the heart of the sound is the kamale n'goni, played by Tani himself, a West African lute often regarded as an ancestor of the banjo. Traditionally associated with Malian hunters, Wasulu music was believed to charm the spirits of the animals they pursued. Its deep musical lineage helped shape the foundations of blues and world music while foreshadowing genres such as bluegrass and folk.
The Afrofunkstars channel this heritage into performances that are both uplifting and deeply spiritual, inspiring audiences and fellow musicians alike. A defining feature of the band is its fluid lineup: each show brings together a unique mix of collaborators, singers, and instrumentalists, ensuring that no two performances are ever the same. That unpredictability is part of the magic of a live Afrofunkstars show, you never know what's coming next. One thing, however, is certain; before long, you will be swept up in the band's irresistible spirit, dancing, moving, and fully immersed in the groove.

In Tandem
In Tandem is simply a continuation of the 45-year relationship between Victor Campbell and Don Linke. It takes the skills of listening, improvisation, and equal responsibility one finds in a larger group and reduces it all to Just the Two of Us. Challenging but crazy fun.
Both a guitarist and bassist, Linke has been a mainstay of the regional music scene for nearly 50 years. Graduating from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in 1980, he was named Director of Jazz Guitar Studies in 1985. From 2002 until 2015, he assumed the same role at UWM. Don’s prowess as a solo guitarist has been compared to Joe Pass, and his group efforts to Wes and Pat Metheny. Retired from formal teaching, all energy is refocused on practice and performance.
Campbell has lent his talents to an array of local and national artists. Ko-thi Dance company, Brian Lynch, Bobby Broom, Manty Ellis, Melvin Rhyne, Dr. Eddie Henderson, and many more have benefited from Victor’s authentic jazz percussion. A student and graduate of the famed Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, he continues to teach the tradition every time he takes the stage.
