MANTIS-Anders Svanoe, Brad Townsend, Nick Zielinski - 7 & 9 PM Two Shows

MANTIS-Anders Svanoe, Brad Townsend, Nick Zielinski - 7 & 9 PM Two Shows

Aug 13, 7:00pm - Aug 13, 10:30pm

Cafe CODA1224 Williamson st.Madison, WI53703 Map

MANTIS is:
Anders Svanoe-baritone saxophone
Brad Townsend-bass
Nick Zielinski-drums

"While taking a bit of a breather from releasing his State of the Baritone series, Anders Svanoe joined forces with bassist Brad Townsend and drummer Nick Zielinski to record Mantis. Svanoe's compositions paired with two-thirds of Minneapolis' avant-fusion band ARP of the Covenant (unplugged here) deliver an assorted mix of highly emotive styles. The trio upgrades the saxophone trio format with freedom, though freedom anchored by some heavy grooves. The title track "Mantis" marches a procession only to be broken up first by Svanoe's baritone exorcism of notes. The march progresses, interrupted next by Townsend's scraping bowed soliloquy. This is followed by a pulse, which could be the sampled background for a hip hop star's lyrics. With this trio, anything is possible. "Intersection" morphs from a shuffle groove to punk rock drumming, as Svanoe works the upper register of his massive horn and Townsend's bass is bowed in a semi- classical manner.

Show dates and time:

Charlie Ballantine Trio (BlueStem Jazz)

Charlie Ballantine Trio (BlueStem Jazz)

Aug 20, 7:00pm

Cafe CODA1224 Williamson st.Madison, WI53703 Map

Charlie Ballantine, Cassius Goens III, & Jesse Wittman come together in this amazing trio at Cafe Coda!

Charlie Ballantine is acclaimed as one of the finest and most versatile young guitarists on the scene today. JAZZ TIMES MAGAZINE hails his playing as “teeming with intricate grooves and maniacal precision his guitar work is both beautiful and complex” and VINTAGE GUITAR MAGAZINE described his style by stating “Jazz, rock, and folk music peacefully coexist in Charlie Ballantine’s world”.
Equipped with an impressive body of original compositions on albums like “Vonnegut” and “Cold Coffee”, Ballantine also displays a great reverence for the jazz tradition through the inclusion of standards like ‘My One and Only Love’, ‘East of the Sun’ and an entire double album dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk released September 2021. “In the vein of fellow guitarists like John Scofield, Bill Frisell and Julian Lage, Ballantine reconciles his educational background in jazz with the stylistic background of his instrument. He approaches the gratifying tonal and harmonic language of rock/roots with the groove, ambition and improvisational focus of a jazz musician” - (JAZZIZ MAGAZINE)

Cassius Goens III, Assistant Professor of Music (Jazz Drums) at Ball State University, is a highly sought-after musician, clinician, and educator in the greater Indianapolis area as well as across the Midwest. At Ball State, Goens teaches individual lessons in applied jazz drum set to undergraduate and graduate major and non-major percussion students, facilitates a Perspectives of Jazz course, and coaches jazz performing ensembles.

As a performer, Goens is an active member of the Scott Routenberg Trio, which recently released their debut album Every End is a Beginning on Summit Records and have been featured at such notable venues as The Green Mill (Chicago), The Velvet Note (Atlanta), The Jazz Kitchen (Indianapolis) and the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Indy Jazz Fest. Goens also performs all original compositions throughout the Midwest with his jazz quintet Groove Theory, and has appeared at Andy’s Jazz Club (Chicago) and main stage at the 2012 Iowa City Jazz Fest.

Jesse Wittman is a prolific bassist out of Indianapolis having played with countless musicians throughout the midwest including Bobby Broom, Frank Glover, Charlie Ballantine, Rob Dixon, Steve Alee, Fareed Haque, and Greg Ward as well as many globally renowned musicians such as Dave King of the Bad Plus, Walter Smith III, Emmet Cohen, Adam Larson, and many others. As well as performing Jesse has also had a prominent recording career having recorded on dozens of jazz albums such as Charlie Ballantine's award winning "Life Is Brief: The Music of Bob Dylan". Jesse also holds degrees from Indiana University and Butler university having studied under well known educators such as David Baker, Luke Gillespie, and Brent Wallrab.

Ben Sidran Trio

Aug 23, 7:00pm

Ben Sidran has been a major force in the modern day history of jazz and rock and roll, having played keyboards with or produced such artists as Van Morrison, Diana Ross, Michael Franks, Rickie Lee Jones, Mose Allison and Steve Miller.

It's been a long and varied journey for Sidran—from playing boogie-woogie piano as a six year old in Racine, Wisconsin, leaning into his jazz records, “literally like an Eskimo huddled around a fire,” to growing up to play boogie-woogie piano around the world. Despite the reality that he is better known in Europe and Japan than in America—a fact of life for most jazz musicians—Ben Sidran is an American success story.

Leslie Vincent at Cafe Coda

Oct 1, 7:00pm

Cafe CODA1224 Williamson st.Madison, WI53703 Map

Join us for an evening of jazz, soul, and pop with Twin Cities chanteuse Leslie Vincent!

Leslie Vincent is a Minneapolis jazz and Great American songbook singer known for her “trademark wit, soulful vocals, and riveting aural and stage presence" (Twin Cities Arts Reader). Described as a cross between Amy Winehouse and Madeleine Peyroux, Leslie brings a contemporary freshness to timeless tunes.

Originally a stage actor, Leslie spent years cultivating a theatre career before pursuing jazz after meeting and collaborating with renowned Minnesota pianist George Maurer.

“Leslie exudes confidence, humor, quirkiness, and the vocal range to knock down any song. And although she’s also involved in theater, nothing about the performance from last night felt scripted” - Music in Minnesota

In 2020, she released her debut album, These Foolish Things, timeless jazz classics arranged by Maurer. The release led to a feature on the cover of Lavender Magazine and a sold-out album release show at Crooners — one of the premier jazz venues in the Midwest.

Since then, she’s emerged as a celebrated local artist performing at Crooners, Icehouse, the Granada Theater, kj’s hideaway, garnering the attention of Jazz.88 and becoming a regular in-studio guest.
