Dayna Stephens Quartet: Madison Jazz Festival

Dayna Stephens Quartet: Madison Jazz Festival

Jun 8, 7:00pm

Cafe CODA1224 Williamson st.Madison, WI53703 Map

The Madison Jazz Festival kicks off with a special performance by the Dayna Stephens Quartet on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Cafe CODA. Seating is general admission. Advance tickets can be purchased online. Online ticket sales end 2 hours before showtime. Tickets are also available at the door beginning at 6:30pm. $20 advance / $25 door.

Dayna Stephens is globally recognized as a saxophonist, composer and arranger, and is the first place recipient of the 2019 DownBeat Critics Poll in the category Rising Star—Tenor Saxophone. Stephens has led a storied career travelling and recording with Kenny Barron, Brad Meldhau, Tom Harrell, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Fred Hersch, and Esperanza Spalding, among many others — as well as leading the iconic Dayna Stephens Quartet. Now in its second iteration, the Quartet, featuring young, inspired musicians, represents a new chapter in jazz, and in Stephens’ career. One that embraces his role as a mentor, carrying on the legacy of the music while evolving it alongside the next generation.

NPR’s Kevin Whitehead says: “Dayna Stephens can cry and rip it up on tenor, but at heart, he’s a streamlined melodic player. His handsome down-the-middle tone is not too heavy or light, though he can lean either way. His sound is sleek, with very light vibrato. And the lines he improvises are uncluttered and well-organized. His horn sings”.

The Madison Jazz Festival is organized by the Wisconsin Union Theater and Arts + Literature Laboratory, and is made possible with the support of The Capital Times, John and Carolyn Peterson Charitable Foundation, Dane Arts, Madison Music Collective, Madison Jazz Jam, NewBridge Madison, Audio for the Arts, High Noon Saloon, Gunderson Funeral Home, Graduate Madison, WORT FM, Summit Credit Union, and Madison Gas & Electric, and Carlson Black O'Callaghan & Battenberg LLP, with additional funds from the Endres Manufacturing Company Foundation, the Evjue Foundation, Inc., charitable arm of The Capital Times, the W. Marques Carroll Quintet - Madison Jazz Festival

Marques Carroll Quintet - Madison Jazz Festival

Jun 16, 8:00pm

Cafe CODA1224 Williamson st.Madison, WI53703 Map

The Madison Jazz Festival welcomes the Marques Carroll Quintet on Friday, June 16, 2023, 8:00pm at Cafe CODA. Seating is general admission. Advance tickets can be purchased at madjazzfestcarroll.bpt.me. Online ticket sales end 2 hours before showtime. Tickets are also available at the door.

The performance will take you on a journey with select pieces to encourage you and connect you with yourself and those around you. This music embodies positivity, history, and optimism of good things to come. Marques Carroll has spent the last three years cultivating two albums centered on stories and people, The Ancestors' Call and Foundations, both of which will be featured. His debut album, The Ancestors’ Call connects deeply with his ancestors of African lineage and serves as a remembrance of their strength and wisdom as a foundation for life. Foundations pays tribute to the family and mentors that have been Carroll’s support network in his life as an artist, educator, and man.

Marques Carroll - Trumpet
Sam Jewell - Drums
Christian Dillingham - Bass
Julius Tucker - Piano
Brent Griffin - Alto

Chicago based trumpeter Marques Carroll is keeping the tradition of jazz alive while pushing the genre forward into exciting new territory. A bold performer and passionate educator, he is dedicated to preserving the authentic culture of jazz and spreading his holistic love of music around the world.

Born into a musical family in St. Louis, Marques fell in love with the trumpet when he was only 8 years old. His grandfather worked with jazz legend Clark Terry who would become a major influence on the young musician. Marques grew up absorbing the blues of Louis Armstrong and the laid back sounds of Miles Davis, eventually going on to study jazz performance at DePaul University. He expanded his palette to include classical and hip-hop influences, making him a throughly modern and versatile musician.

Marques has worked and shared the stage with jazz powerhouses like Carmen Bradford, Dee Dee Bridgewater (Count Basie Band), Etienne Charles, Christian McBride, Jon Faddis, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Randy Weston (Chicago Jazz Ensemble). Marques’ compositions are soulful explorations of culture and consciousness. A storyteller at heart, he uses his horn to break down barriers between genres, writing evocative music that speaks directly to the soul. “Every instrument plays a character,” Marques says, describing his methods. “I want people to open their minds to what the story is about. Every piece I write is purposeful.”

Outdoor Mobile Orchestra - Madison Make Music Day

Outdoor Mobile Orchestra - Madison Make Music Day

Jun 21, 12:00pm

Cafe CODA1224 Williamson st.Madison, WI53703 Map

As part of the city wide music appreciation day, Cafe Coda will be welcoming artist John Himmelfarb and his two interactive musical trucks! Yes, you read that right. These musical trucks will be interactive, meaning people will be able to move about and drum on various parts of these automobiles. We'll also have other instruments available for people to play outside. These trucks will be parked outside the front doors of Cafe Coda starting at noon on June 21st.

More about these incredible works of art below. 👇

KB-3 is both the title of this sculpture and the International Harvester Company truck model designation. This KB-3, a one ton dually, is a model year 1947. The objects added to it to create the sculpture came from scrap yards, barns and donations from friends. Even the diamond-plate pickup truck box came from a scrap yard.

Penelope Awaiting Her Chamberlain is a 1946 Chevy 2 ton. The title is both a reference to the Penelope of the Odysseus story and to the sculptor John Chamberlain, who used scrap from wrecked autos to make his work. Like Chamberlain, I am basically a formalist. The arrangements of color, shape, texture and other aspects of visual language are more important than the narrative qualities, which can be supplied by the viewer.

"When making these truck sculptures, I became aware of their sonic potential, just banging things around to get them in place. At about the same time, I began to hear concerts of new music, some of which used unusual instruments, some made by the composers. I started to look for musicians interested in playing my trucks, and eventually, several concerts materialized from that idea." - John Himmelfarb

Tony Catania-tenor saxophone
Jim Doherty-trumpet

Louka Patenaude-guitar
Henry Boehm-bass
Brad Townsend-bass
Michael Brenneis-drums/electronics
Nick Zielinski-drums

Special guest Geoff Brady will be joining the group on May 27th (drums) and June 1st (vibes).

Starting March 2nd, and every first Thursday of the month, Cafe Coda will present a new large improvising ensemble, ASTRO (Anders Svanoe’s Teleporting Rhythmic Orchestra) at 7:30. The group features an all-star group of improvisors and composers from the Madison area. The group will teleport musically from experimental to more familiar music written by baritone saxophonist, Anders Svanoe.

"The music here is anything but predicable and Svanoe writes memorable melodies, like the hard swinging bebop composition "Bird Strike" which would fit easily on a Pepper Adams recording. Svanoe's heated solo gives way to the coolness of Doherty's trumpet. Elsewhere the saxophonist goes toe-to-toe with Conroy on the brief meditative piece "Spiral Staircase Glamour;" and extends the reflection on "Altimeter High," which could easily be confused with the music of Don Cherry. Then there's the cartoon theme/Albert Ayler march "Walk On The SAS" which mines madcap for relevance. The closing track "Subsonic" features the bassists' bowed and plucked sounds that give way to luscious harmonies. Svanoe's richly verdant horn opens the composition to images of blue skies blue.

Mark Corroto- All About Jazz

This album thrives on ambiguity, bleeding between styles and moods. If it’s firmly rooted in jazz it also explicitly draws on Svanoe’s love of heavy metal. If Svanoe is building these pieces around definite, composed themes (the full trio shares composition credits on the masterfully eerie “Hotshot”), he’s also determined to bend them into oblique improvised corners. Don’t get comfortable (or uncomfortable) in any one mode for too long. “Rosy Cheeks” takes you into the baritone-as-suave-tenor mode, a welcome if an almost misleading turn in the album’s sequence.

Scott Gordon- Tone Madison
